Chief Joseph Nez Perce´

1844-1904

His name….”Hin-mut-too-yah-lah-kekht” or “Thunder-Rolling-in-the-Mountains”

A towering man of 6’2” and 230 pounds, Chief Joseph was considered or regarded by his adversaries as being “The Red Napoleon of the West.”

He once said, “I buried my father in that beautiful valley of the winding waters (Wallowa Valley.)  I love that canal more than all the rest of the world.

Chief Joseph led his people in the Nez Perce’ War of 1877.  Although Chief Joseph was recognized as a great warrior, he in fact was a defender of liberty, a peace maker, and protector of women and children.

“His name will…take a place in history with those of Tecumseh, Brant, Blackhawk, Pontiac, and Sitting Bull; and by man he is considered the greatest of all Indian warriors.” Eliza Spalding Warner

Chief Joseph

“You might as well expect the rivers to run backward as that any man who was born free should be contracted to be penned up and denied liberty to go where he pleases.”  Chief Joseph Nez Perce’
