Chief Joseph Nez Perce´
1844-1904
His name….”Hin-mut-too-yah-lah-kekht” or
“Thunder-Rolling-in-the-Mountains”
A towering man of 6’2” and 230 pounds, Chief Joseph was
considered or regarded by his adversaries as being “The Red Napoleon of the
West.”
He once said, “I buried my father in that beautiful
valley of the winding waters (Wallowa Valley.) I love that canal more than
all the rest of the world.
Chief Joseph led his people in the Nez Perce’ War of
1877. Although Chief Joseph was recognized as a great warrior, he in fact
was a defender of liberty, a peace maker, and protector of women and
children.

Tecumseh, Brant, Blackhawk, Pontiac, and Sitting Bull; and by man he is
